China Great Wall Museum: Plan Your Visit
The China Great Wall Museum is open again. It sits at the foot of the Badaling Great Wall in northern Beijing. The museum first opened in 1994 and closed in April 2022 for renovation (翻修). Work began in December 2023, and the museum opened its doors on October 24, 2026.

The museum covers 16,000 square metres. Its main exhibition has more than 700 objects (展品). Many of them are borrowed from 24 museums across China. They tell the story of the Great Wall, which is over 2,000 years old. On the second floor, a large glass wall offers visitors a wide view of the Badaling Great Wall outside.
Before you go
For now, the museum is free, and visitors do not need to book online. Bring your ID card or student card. It is open from 9:00 to 17:00, but visitors cannot enter after 16:30. It is closed on Tuesdays, except on public holidays.Please keep quiet inside. When you take photos, do not use flash. Do not eat or drink in the exhibition halls.
Know the numbers
The Great Wall runs more than 21,000 kilometres across 15 provinces and other areas. Beijing has about 520 kilometres of it. Badaling is the most visited part of the Great Wall, so come early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
