Installing a little door in, well, your main door can be a great way to allow your pets to come and go as they please, but sometimes leads to unwanted visitors too. Petvation is looking to change that with the help of AI facial recognition and a mobile app.
You may already have a little entry in your door that only gives access to your cats or dogs, but that likely means your pets will have to wear some sort of “key” on a collar to identify them and unlock the pet door. And these can be somewhat heavy. Therefore, considerate Petvation developers have developed a smart pet door without a “key”. They make use of the face recognition technology that has already been applied to our smartphones and computers to ensure that access to the home is only given to authorized(批准) family members.
However, the developers recognize that identifying and authorizing animal faces is more challenging than with humans, and therefore employ multiple-image full-body animal recognition. The AI model is expected to be continuously improved over time for better accuracy. And in addition to identifying cats and dogs, the system can also recognize all kinds of animals, so the entry point will remain firmly closed to unwanted guests.
The company says that three independent safety mechanisms(机制) are employed to “keep your pet safe from head to tail.” First, sensors detect and monitor the cats or dogs as they approach and pass through. There’s also a light anti-pinch(防夹) mechanism in place to ensure that tails aren’t caught in a descending door. And finally the system checks all sensors during operation and will enter a safe mode if issues are detected, and inform the human in charge through a mobile app that the Petvation needs some attention.
That app is also used for setup and control, including the ability to give access to specific household pets and keep track of the comings and goings of pets. The door can also be opened or closed remotely from within the app.
The Petvation team is currently raising production funds on Kickstarter, where pledges(抵押) start at US$169. If all goes to plan, shipping is estimated to start in October.

1.What does the underlined word “that” refer to?
A Wrong pets’ entry.
B The mobile app.
C AI facial recognition.
D Installing another door.
解析:选A。 故选A。
2.What can be inferred from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A Traditional pet doors are difficult to unlock.
B The smart pet door uses completely new technology.
C The smart pet door system can only identify cats and dogs.
D Developers improved face recognition technology in the door.
3.In which situation does the system “contact” the pet owner through a mobile app?
A There is something wrong with the sensors.
B Pets’ tails aren’t caught in a descending door.
C The phone battery is going to be dead.
D Unwanted visitors want to enter the door.
解析:选A。 根据第五段最后一句的“And finally the system checks all sensors during operation and will enter a safe mode if issues are detected, and inform the human in charge through a mobile app that the Petvation needs some attention.” 故选A。
4.What type of writing is this text?
A A report.
B An announcement.
C An advertisement.
D A poster.
