Like most parents, Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier want their children to experience the beauty of the world. Unfortunately, time is not on their side; they plan to see as much of the world as possible before some of their four children lose their eyesight(视力).

Edith and Sebastien’s daughter Mia had a special illness. Most people who have this illness lose all of their eyesight by the time they are adults. Later, they were told that two of their three sons had the same illness. The parents decided to fill their childhood with as many wonderful experiences as possible.

Their plan was to leave in July 2020 at first, but COVID-19 delayed their plans by two years. In March 2022, they threw their trip schedule out the window and started off. They are going to spend a whole year traveling, and they’re choosing their destinations(目的地) on the fly.

The first place they visited was Africa. They spent time in Namibia, Zambia, and Tanzania. Then it was off to Turkey, where they lived for a full month. After that, it was Mongolia followed by Indonesia. Along the way, the family experienced difficult weather and bad feelings. But Edith and Sebastien believe that these experiences are useful.

“Traveling is something you can learn from. It’s nice and fun, but it also can be really hard. You can be uncomfortable. You can be tired. So there’s a lot that you can learn from travel itself,” said Edith. The family has noticed that their children are growing in ways they never could have imagined when they set out on their journey.
