According to the World Food Programme, one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted in the world. This amounts to about 1.3 billion tons per year, worth about $1 trillion. All the food produced but never eaten would be able to feed two billion people. That’s more than twice the number of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition across the globe.
Yooupi just graduated in France with a master’s degree in Art, and she has been posting dumpster diving(捡垃圾) vlogs for a year. People were shocked by her pictures of just how much good food is wasted.
It all began when she visited an open market at the weekend, where she saw many people, including college students and even office workers, “saving” discarded(丢弃的) fruits and vegetables. The shop owners threw the food away because the tomatoes or apples lost their shapes, or because they were “ugly”. What’s more, the supermarkets and bakeries would throw edible(可食用的) food according to their “best sell by” dates. She found this to be an interesting topic that she could use in her vlog, so she started to learn about it.
“I even made friends with other ‘pickers’ here,” she said. “We usually share information. My ‘picker’ friends are all different. Some of them are really living from hand to mouth, but there were also office workers, and some are even quite rich,” she explained. Yooupi has also met some people who collect discarded but still edible food to help people in need.
People have different opinions about what Yooupi did. There are people who have changed their mind about waste, while there are others who don’t quite understand the intention behind Yoopi’s efforts. “I made these videos just to reflect a phenomenon, not to live on picking up discarded food,” she said. “What is more important is the changes in values than what I found in dumpsters. I pay more attention to anti-waste.”
She hopes what she does may also influence other people to change their lifestyles, thus finally reducing waste of the planet.

A The food waste problem is serious.
B A lot of food is produced every day.
C Food safety is not taken seriously.
D Many people are suffering from hunger.
解析:选A。 故选A。
2.What is not a reason for people to discard food according to the text?
A Its shape is destroyed.
B It looks not good.
C It is “out of date”.
D It is not delicious.
根据第三段的“because the tomatoes or apples lost their shapes, or because they were ‘ugly’. What’s more, the supermarkets would throw food according to their ‘best sell by’ dates.”
3.What can we know about Yooupi’s “picker” friends?
A All of them are living a hard life.
B Some think anti-waste important.
C They all pick up food for themselves.
D They usually pick up food alone.
4.What does Yooupi want to encourage people to do?
A To reduce food waste.
B To pick up discarded food.
C To help people in need.
D To change their mind about waste.
解析:选A。 根据第五段的“I made these videos just to reflect a phenomenon, not to live on picking up discarded food”和最后一段的“influence other people to change their lifestyles, thus finally reducing waste of the planet”可知,Yooupi制作这些视频只是为了反映食品浪费这一现象,而不是为了以捡垃圾为生。 故选A。
