On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” He thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase (追赶).

Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

Paragraph 1:

The car abruptly stopped in front of him.

Paragraph 2:

A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived.

Mac,Paul,friends

Paragraph 1:

The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Paul yelled, “Back door!” Without any hesitation, Mac jumped off his bicycle and rushed into the car. In the meantime, the wolf caught up. However, they were safe now. Looking out, they saw the wolf standing by Mac’s bicycle like a killer. Mac burst out, “Oh, dear! My friends.” Having been made aware of the danger Mac’s friends might encounter, they came up with a good idea. First, they started the engine to make a roaring noise. The horn was also sounded to give a warning. So confused and frightened did the animal look that it ran off shortly after. People in the car breathed a sigh of relief.

Paragraph 2:

A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. The moment Mac saw them, he climbed out of the vehicle and rushed to hug them. “You could never have imagined what I experienced just now. I thought I was going to die.” Mac told his friends what had happened. Saying goodbye to two kind angels, they jumped onto their bicycles and pedaled on, agreeing to keep in one another’s sight line. Finally, they arrived in Alaska, safe and sound.

1.词汇

encounter v. 碰见

2.短语

be aware of 意识到;safe and sound 安然无恙

Having been made aware of the danger Mac’s friends might encounter, Paul and Becky came up with a good idea.

So confused and frightened did the animal look that it ran off shortly after.

[分析] so...that...

A Season for Mercy

Polly, my stepmother, suggested the sweetest nameMercy. We soon learned it was just what this new puppy would need.

My parents’ naughty dog would jump out of bed and go-go-go all day long. So when they brought home a Christmas tree, they expected chaos. To their astonishment, Mercy didn’t seem to care. She paid zero attention to the tree suddenly growing in her living room. Nor did she react to the fancy presents under it, including a wrapped box of Milk-Bones.

Dad and Polly were confused—they’d never had a dog that didn’t force them to move everything to higher ground as if they were expecting a flood. But Mercy seemed oblivious

A few days before Christmas, Polly awoke early, as usual. She passed the dimly (昏暗地) lit living room and then stopped cold. Glancing back into the room, she saw that every last present was gone. Only the tree was still there.

Had they been robbed? Why hadn’t Mercy barked? Where was she? Had the burglars (窃贼) taken her? Suddenly, Polly noticed a scrap of ribbon on the floor. Then a bit of torn wrapping paper a few feet away. Some glitter beyond that. The clues all made a trail leading toward the back door.

Polly turned on the light of the backyard. The perpetrator’s (罪犯) head lifted and froze. Alarm and guilt made her eyes wide. Oh, yes, it was Mercy.

She lay under her favorite tree in a nest of wrapping paper, chewed-up boxes, and curling bits of ribbon. Presents were pawed from their packages. Fragments of tissue paper mixed with the last remaining evidence of gifts.

Paragraph 1:

Clearly Mercy’s self-control had failed.

Paragraph 2:

A few days later, Polly found Mercy guiltily licking a plate where a doughnut had just been.

Paragraph 1:

Clearly Mercy’s self-control had failed. She’d silently carried the packages out the door so she could enjoy herself in private. Almost anything was gone, including cookies, chocolates, candy canes, and four pounds of Milk-BonesMercy was so lucky my parents didn’t punish it as it was expected. On the contrary, they were so grateful that they laughed off the ruined presents. Only one problem remained. With all the presents destroyed, my parents couldn’t know what gift people had given us, so how could they send out thank-you cards?

Paragraph 2:

A few days later, Polly found Mercy guiltily licking a plate where a doughnut had just been. Polly took a photo of the shamefaced dog and used it to make thank-you notes. The caption read, “Thank you for the...” Inside, the whole story was explained. We all had to laugh. And everyone shared the sweet story. Mercy presented the problem, and Mercy provided the answer finally. It’s really a season for Mercy.
