Schools like to give out lots of awards.These awardsserve the purpose of honoring the ones receivingthem and also encouraging the others to dobetter.This strategy works,but by giving out toomany,the awards could become commonplace andless important.

学校喜欢颁发很多奖项（给学生）。这些颁奖的目的是给予得奖人光荣，并鼓励其他人更加努力。这种策略有其效果，但如果给得太多的话，这些奖项就会变得很普通且变得不怎么重要了。

One type of awards is the excellence award.They give this to one person in each grade levelwho ranked first in a subject area.The subjects include math,science,language arts,socialstudies,foreign language,and various arts like theatre,dance,and visual arts.Those who get twoor more of these awards immediately stand out.

有一种奖称为优秀奖。校方把它颁发给各年级某一学科排名第一的人。这些学科包括数学，科学，语文，社会学科，外语，和各种艺术学科，例如戏剧，舞蹈，和美术。如果有人获得两个奖项以上，他马上就会变成从人所瞩目的焦点。

Sometimes there are awards for those who improved significantly over the past.If a student isfar from being the best,he could pretend to do badly first,then show much improvement thenext time.Another interesting award is the outstanding ESL(English as a SecondLanguage)student award,which is given to one ESL student for doing well in learningEnglish.What is funny is that there are rarely more than a handful of ESL students to choosefrom.

有一些奖项是颁给那些比过去进步很多的人。如果有个学生很难得奖，他可以故意在一开始表现得很差。而使下一次进步了很多，（这样就可以获得进步奖）。另外一件有趣的是杰出ESL（英文是第二语言）学生奖，这是颁给一个英语学得最好的ESL学生。好笑的是，候选的ESL学生很少会超过5个人。
