The Shanghai Disney Resort, an under-construction theme park by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, is planned to open on June 16, 2016. This is the first Disney park in mainland China and the second within the Greater China region. The site will cover 963 acres in Pudong, Shanghai, or about 3 times the size of the Hong Kong Disneyland Park, at a cost of 24.5 billion yuan for the new theme park and an additional 4.5 billion yuan to build other aspects of the resort, totaling 34 billion yuan. 43% of the resort will be owned by the Walt Disney Company and the remaining 57% will be owned by the Shanghai Shendi Group.
Disney chairman and CEO in China, Bob Iger said that Shanghai Disney Resort would be a world-class family entertainment destination that blends the magic of Disney and the cultural spirit and beauty of China. It has two hotels, Disneytown — its international shopping, dining and entertainment district, Wishing Star Park’s beautiful gardens and six themed lands of mainland China’s first Disney theme park — Shanghai Disneyland.
At Shanghai Disneyland, Disney stories will come to life at the tallest, largest and most interactive castle at any Disney theme park. Guests also will be able to experience Disney characters in each land, including Mickey and his pals on Mickey and in Gardens of Imagination.
