China is using AI and robots to help care for its aging population. Over 310 million people in China are aged 60 or above, making up about 22% of the population. To address this challenge, elderly care robots are becoming a reality (现实). Recently, China led the creation of a global standard for such robots, setting rules for their design and safety. These robots can now play chess with seniors, help them walk, and even provide therapy.
Elderly care robots are relatively new and less advanced than factory robots, but some people have already found them helpful. At Shenzhen Nursing Home, robots are part of daily life. “Technology improves seniors’ lives and tests new ideas,” says Li Xipo, director of the nursing home. Companies are working hard to meet seniors’ needs. During the Spring Festival, a Shenzhen company’s robots helped elderly users climb Taishan Mountain. “This experience shows that many seniors still need better care tools,” says Yu Yunbo, a company manager.
In other cities, robots are making a difference too. A 70-year-old stroke survivor in Shenyang regained his ability to walk using an exoskeleton rehabilitation (康复) device developed by SIASUN Robot and Automation Co. In Chengdu, a companion robot named Yang Yang wakes seniors up, shares weather updates, and reminds them of daily tasks.
Experts believe robots will soon do more. “Future robots will notice seniors’ feelings, predict health risks, and act like family members,” says researcher Zhang Yunquan. With policy support and advancing AI, China’s elderly care robots aim to ease (减轻) family burdens and improve lives.
