A special monkey at Hefei Wildlife Park in Anhui has become famous online since May. The male black-capped capuchin (黑帽悬猴), nicknamed Dazhuang, became popular after a visitor shared a video of him during the May Day holiday.
Dazhuang has black fur and a square-shaped face. In Chinese culture, a square face is often called a “guo-character face,” making him look surprisingly human-like. Though he has lived at the zoo for 10 years, he only gained attention recently. Some people joke that Dazhuang is “ugly-cute”, but zookeeper Zhang Chunxue disagrees. She explains that male capuchins often have square faces and strong bodies. “Dazhuang is actually very handsome!” she says.
In 2015, Dazhuang and a younger male capuchin named Xiaoshuai came to Hefei from Hangzhou Safari Park. Last year, the zoo brought a female capuchin named Xiaomei from Wuxi. In April, Dazhuang and Xiaomei welcomed a baby. Visitors love watching Dazhuang and Xiaomei with their baby. Fans call this “the happy life of Dazhuang”.
Dazhuang is not the only animal star in China. Last year, a fat leopard (豹) in Sichuan reminded people of a cartoon character. White-faced monkeys Dudu and Huahua in Nanjing also became popular, along with their baby. A fat fox in Yunnan was nicknamed “Gas Tank”, and two overweight pandas in Hainan even went on a diet plan!
The zoo says it is protecting Dazhuang’s living environment while managing visitors. As Hefei resident Pan Yuyu says, these animal stars show how much Chinese people love wildlife.
