In recent weeks, the little Labubu creatures are seemingly showing up everywhere. With lines out the door of stores that hold them, there’s no doubt it’s a very fashionable accessory of 2025. Many people are on the lookout for them.
These creatures first originated in Hong Kong. Unlike popular predecessors like Hello Kitty, they are described as elvish (小精灵的) creatures. Artist Kasing Lung created them in a Nordic-inspired picture book. After the book’s release, the popular toy company Pop Mart created the first collectible Labubu figures for sale in 2019. Since then, sales have been rising as new collections are released.
Labubu is part of a tribe known as “The Monsters”. A few key features make Labubu unique: wide eyes almost as big as her “mischievous (顽皮的) smile”, a furry body, and nine very visible teeth in her grin. From collection to collection, each Labubu can be seen wearing various outfits and different fun accessories, making each one unique. But don’t let the mischievous smile make you think they are evil. The artist says they are well-natured little creatures with good intentions.
What makes Labubu so popular, besides the obvious cute charm, is that they are collectibles and hard to get. This adds to the excitement of the hunt. They come in blind boxes, so the hunt becomes harder if you want a particular color or Monster. Because of the mystery, the reveal is a surprise. Many fans record their first impression to capture the moment.
This excitement transcends age groups. Everyone, from pop stars to middle school students, enjoys them. Finding one creates a sense of joy. You can say, “Yes, I succeeded and found a Labubu.”
Pop Mart is the best place to buy them. They release new figures first online every Thursday and in stores on Fridays. You can also check local toy shops. Some people even find Labubu in bubble tea shops with claw machines. Winning one can take time, but the success brings happiness. While Labubu figures often sell out fast at Pop Mart, the hunt continues for these charming little creatures.
