Long ago, a king with one eye ruled a land. He loved art and gave prizes to good artists. But he hated lies. He always wanted the truth.
One day, the king wanted to get himself painted. He asked three men to draw his face. “If you paint me perfectly,” said the king, “I’ll give you a great prize. If not, you’ll be punished!”
The first artist showed the painted picture of the king. The king felt bad as the picture showed that one of the eyes was blind, though he had drawn both eyes. The king got angry. “This shows my weakness (弱点)!” he said. The artist went to jail (监狱) for ten years.
The second artist painted the king with two good eyes. The king shouted, “This is a lie! You are pretending I’m perfect!” That artist got five years in jail.
Now came the third artist. He painted the king aiming an arrow with his bow. His good eye was open wide to aim. His blind eye was naturally closed in the picture. You could only see one eye! The king smiled. “This is perfect! You showed truth cleverly.” He gave the artist gold and jewels.
