On a special Wednesday in New York, Chinese basketball star Yang Hansen celebrated great news. He was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA Draft. This exciting event happened at the Barclays Center.
Yang became the ninth Chinese player ever chosen in the NBA Draft. He is the first Chinese player drafted since Zhou Qi in 2016. This ends a nine-year wait. He is also the highest-drafted Chinese player since Yi Jianlian in 2007. This is an important step for Chinese basketball.
The draft day was extra special because it was also Yang’s 20th birthday! Before the draft, Yang worked very hard. For 24 days, he traveled across the United States. He visited 14 different NBA teams for workouts. This young player comes from Qingdao, Shandong province.
Yang played extremely well in China’s CBA league. He won the CBA Rising Star of the Year award two years straight (2023–24 and 2024–25). He was also chosen for the All-CBA Domestic First Team and the CBA All-Star team both years. In 2023–24, he earned the title of CBA Defensive Player of the Year. Standing tall at 7-foot-1 (2.16 meters), he plays as a forward-center. He is a strong player on both offense and defense.
