One day, wood crafting artist Hua Yong was waiting for water to boil in her studio. Without thinking, she picked up her phone and refreshed the screen. At that moment, she understood how fast modern life is. “We live in a very fast world. It’s not easy to relax,” Hua said.
Hua, the winner of the 2024 Hand of Wisdom prize, spent two months in Paris last year. This quiet time helped her think about creating art. She tried using simple shapes, turning and repeating them. She wanted to make something new and show it with great Chinese craftsmanship.
Back in China, 42-year-old Hua worked with purple sandalwood (檀香木) and other good woods. She made beautiful screens, cabinets, and tables. She used special joints and spent a lot of time polishing (抛光) by hand. “Making wood art needs time,” she said.
Hua’s works are very careful. She chooses the best woods and lets them get used to the environment for six months. She measures things very accurately and sands (打磨) the wood many times to make it smooth like jade. Her art teaches us that good things take time.
This May and June, Hua had an exhibition called Changing the World in Silence at Yishu 8 in Beijing. The show had 25 artworks, 11 of which she made after coming back from Paris. Hua hopes people can feel the quiet beauty in her works and find peace in a noisy world.
