China faces a serious challenge: more than half (51.9%) of its children and teenagers have poor eyesight (视力). There, students are trying headphone-like devices that help check their eyesight. These smart devices use artificial intelligence (AI) to watch how students study with their eyes. The devices collect important information in real time: how close students hold books, their sitting position, classroom lighting, and time spent looking at screens. They then create easy-to-understand reports and personal tips. This technology doesn’t just track vision changes — it teaches kids healthier eye habits.
“This is better than traditional paper surveys because it shows us clear patterns,” explained Huo Huanhuan, a doctor of the Shandong Prevention and Control Center for Child and Adolescent Myopia, showing reports produced by the device on her phone. Over 200 schools in Shandong now use this AI system to help prevent vision problems early.
