In July 2025, an important event took place in Geneva, Switzerland. China Mobile, working together with an international organization called GTI and partners like CICT Mobile and vivo, launched something new called the “6G Open Testbed” at the GTI International Forum. More than 30 partners from companies, universities, and research centers have already joined this exciting project.
So, what is the 6G Open Testbed? It is a global public platform designed for testing the next generation of mobile networks, which we call 6G. Think of it as a large, shared scientific base. It brings together resources from different groups – industry, schools, and research labs – to work openly on this future technology. This platform will be open in many ways, sharing data, interfaces, functions, and testing situations.
The Testbed itself has three main parts. The first is the Simulation Platform. This powerful computer system allows scientists to model and test how 6G technologies might work in different real-world situations. It uses huge computing power and can be changed easily for different needs. The second part is the Prototype System. This is a working model that combines communication abilities with sensing, computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and security. It helps test key future technologies like advanced wireless connections and smart networks. The third part is the Field Testing Environment. This allows testing of real 6G applications, such as smart robots and immersive communication experiences, in actual complex settings.
Why is this important? The goal of the 6G Open Testbed is clear: to connect scientific research with the development of international standards through open cooperation. This open, shared environment will speed up the creation of new applications and business ideas for 6G. It will also help different parts of the industry – companies making network equipment, phones, chips, parts, and instruments – work closely together. This deep cooperation will help these new 6G products develop faster and become ready for use. Ultimately, this project aims to drive a new wave of progress in the mobile information industry, making our future connected world faster, smarter, and more powerful than ever before. It represents a significant global effort to shape the future of communication technology.
