A young man with a master’s degree in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, has become very popular online. Yang, who finished his studies last year, makes special Chinese flatbread called shaobing. His creative pastries have attracted over 500,000 social media followers.
After leaving a regular job, Yang started his shaobing business using his father’s old oven. His creations are far from ordinary. Using only a simple utility knife – no molds – he carefully shapes the dough into detailed designs. These include models like Desert Eagle guns and AK-47s, as well as famous cartoon characters like Labubu and Hello Kitty. Young customers often call his stall a “pastry arsenal.”
His stall is always busy, with people lining up daily. Some customers wait a long time; one grandmother reportedly waited two hours to buy his pastries for her grandson. This all started when a child asked for a custom design, and Yang’s skill, developed through his civil engineering studies, allowed him to create these edible artworks.
Surprisingly, each detailed pastry costs only 1 yuan. Yang explained he first sold them for 3 to 5 yuan but lowered the price so children could afford them. He says he breaks even but has no plans to raise prices.
Many people support his courage to avoid traditional “elite jobs” and praise how he uses his knowledge creatively. They see it as proof that simple things can make a big difference. However, others question if selling street food is the best use of his education, wondering if his field has few opportunities. Some even suggest his stall might be just a way to gain online attention.
Yang isn’t worried by these comments. He feels traditional engineering work wasn’t right for him. His shaobing stall gives him creative freedom and personal satisfaction. He now focuses on building his brand through online videos and is exploring new possibilities. His story connects with many young Chinese people who are redefining success, showing that high-level education can open new paths in areas driven by passion.
