At the 2025 National Athletics Championships, a young runner named Liu Kai made history. He broke the men’s 400-meter national record!
Liu Kai, a 19-year-old from Shandong, blazed around the track in the 400m semifinals (半决赛). His time of 45.06 seconds smashed the old record of 45.14 seconds. That record had been held by Guo Zhongze since 2017 – eight years ago! Liu had made great progress this season.
After the race, Liu Kai said, “I was mainly focused on running comfortably and making it to the final. But the first two groups posted very fast times. I felt fantastic tonight, so I decided to give it my all! My goal was to break 45 seconds. I was very close, but not quite there. I feel a bit sorry about that, but I’m still really happy!”
The men’s 100m competition was incredibly close. Star athlete Xie Zhenye finished fourth in his group and missed the final. Two hours later, the 100m final took place. Deng Xinrui from Guangxi took the win! He clocked his personal best time: 10.06 seconds. This made him one of only seven Chinese runners ever to go under 10.10 seconds.
Li Zeyang from Hubei and Wang Shengjie from Shandong both finished with a time of 10.16 seconds. Li won the silver medal (second place), and Wang took bronze (third place). Both athletes also achieved their personal best times – the fastest they had ever run!
