Shandong Airlines has launched new uniforms named “Qing Weiliao” for its flight attendants. The fresh design mixes traditional Chinese style with modern usefulness. Importantly, female crew can now pick fitted pants or skirts ending at the knee. Both choices come with comfy flat shoes, taking the place of the high heels worn before.
This move answers growing public talk about airline clothing rules. The talk became widely noticed after comedian Xi Ha, a former flight attendant, spoke on TV. She pointed out problems with usual uniform rules in a funny but serious way, especially the strong focus on “short skirts, stockings, and high heels.” Xi Ha raised real safety worries. She explained that in an emergency, like a fire, crew might have to take off stockings (which can catch fire easily) before helping passengers escape. This step loses important time. She also shared her own hard time, remembering how painful company shoes made her buy better ones herself, even facing possible trouble.
Her wish for “more freedom of choice” deeply touched online viewers. Public backing for changing these uniform rules keeps rising. Many passengers actively share opinions online. They use terms like “unfair beauty standards” for rules they feel push women too much.
Health and safety are key reasons for these changes. Medical research clearly shows wearing high heels for long work hours greatly raises dangers. These include painful foot injuries, risky slips and falls, leg vein problems, and long-lasting muscle and bone stress. Standing and walking in heels many hours is not safe or healthy.
Seeing these risks, Chinese airlines are quickly changing their rules. Spring Airlines now needs female crew to wear flat shoes for their whole work time, from pre-flight talks to after-flight meetings, starting July 7, 2025. Hunan Airlines started a similar flat-shoe rule for cabin crew on August 1, 2024. Juneyao Air gives both heels and flats but requires flats during real flight work. Shandong Airlines’ new uniform choice is part of this larger change.
