Chinese animated film Nobody has become a big surprise at the box office this summer. It earned 106 million yuan on a Sunday and reached 559 million yuan nine days after release. On Douban, it got an 8.6/10 rating, even higher than the popular Ne Zha 2 (8.5/10).
What makes Nobody so popular? It comes from Chinese mythology but tells a universal story about survival, courage and life, which connects with many viewers. The film follows a little pig monster who, after losing his job in the King Cave, leaves Langlang Mountain and gathers three other little monsters to form a team. They pretend to be Xuanzang and his disciples from Journey to the West to start their own “pilgrimage (取经之旅)”.
Other monsters laugh at them, saying only those with powerful backgrounds can go on pilgrimages. But the four little monsters don’t give up. They fight strong enemies because they want to live their own lives. Many viewers see themselves in these “nobodies”—ordinary people chasing dreams despite difficulties.
Beyond its story, Nobody also looks amazing. Made by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, it mixes the smooth style of ink-wash painting with detailed brushwork, creating a special Eastern aesthetics (美学). From the foggy views of Langlang Mountain to the little monsters’ furry coats, it honors Chinese culture.
Nobody’s success shows that when traditional culture meets modern storytelling, Chinese animation can shine brightly.
