Early on October 13, the first stop of the 2025-2026 ISU Short Track World Tour season finished in Montreal, Canada. The Chinese team did really well here, winning a total of 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze (铜牌) medals.
The most exciting moment was in the 2000m mixed relay final. The Chinese team — Sun Long, Liu Shao’ang, Wang Xinran and Zhang Chutong — started from the outermost lane. They moved to first place halfway through the race, but were overtaken just before the end. Luckily, Liu Shao’ang showed great skill: he overtook other skaters in the last lap! Finally, the team finished in 2 minutes 39.528 seconds to get the gold. This was China’s first gold medal in the new season.
In the men’s 5000m relay final, the Chinese team (Sun Long, Liu Shao’ang, Li Wenlong and Zhang Baihao) had a tough fight. They once fell to the last place but quickly caught up. When there were 6 laps left, they moved to second place. In the end, they got the silver medal, and South Korea took the gold.
Liu Shao’ang also won a bronze medal in the men’s 1000m, while Sun Long finished fourth. Earlier, Sun had already gotten a bronze in the men’s 1500m.
Looking back at this World Tour stop in Montreal, the Chinese short track speed skating team has made a wonderful start to the new season. The second stop of the World Cup will still be in Montreal soon. Fans and everyone else are looking forward to the Chinese team bringing more great performances there!
