It is 2025 now. Gao Wei is an ordinary bank worker in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. But he has done something amazing over the past 10 years — he has been picking up trash in the mountains on weekends and holidays.
It all started ten years ago. During a mountain climb, Gao was upset to see many plastic bottles in the bushes. They ruined the beautiful scenery, so he cleaned them up. Since then, he has carried a big bag every time he goes outdoors. He picks up litter wherever he sees it, whether in forests, grasslands or by rivers.
By October 2025, Gao had climbed into the mountains 371 times. His hard work has paid off: he has collected over 103,000 drink bottles, 116,000 barbecue sticks and nearly 2,000 kilograms of other trash. In total, that’s more than 10 tons!
Gao’s actions have inspired more people to protect the environment. He set up an online group for volunteer trash-pickers. At first, only about 10 people joined, but soon the number grew to over 100, including students and local people. He also films his trash-picking work and shares the videos online. These videos show how beautiful scenery is spoiled by litter, making more people think about protecting nature. Thanks to his efforts, there is much less trash in Daqing Mountain and other scenic spots. Fewer tourists leave litter behind, and some even take their trash away on their own.
Besides, Gao sold recyclable trash and donated over 8,000 yuan to charity. He shows us that everyone can make a difference. With small but consistent (连续的) efforts, we can all help protect our planet.
