Once again, Jay Chou proved his well-won status as the king of Chinese pop music. It has been more than a year after the pop star released last song, “If You Don’t Love Me, It’s Fine.” His new single “Won’t Cry” broke sales records in September, 2019. 
Although it is successful, it has met with divided opinions online. For now, “Won’t Cry” has a 5.8 rating on Douban, based on over 45,000 reviews. It turned out to be one of Chou’s lowest-rated singles. Many netizens agreed that the song was unoriginal. But one netizen said, “Objectively speaking, it’s not as good as his old songs. But I won’t say it sounds bad.”
Chou has been hugely popular since his first album was released in 2000. In the nearly twenty years since, he has sold over 30 million albums and completed six world tours. His music is a mixture of R&B, rock, rap and classical. The pop singer has also mixed traditional Chinese elements into many of his works, which gave rise to his own “Chou style.”
Though many fans regarded “Won’t Cry” as an average song, they still supported Chou by buying his products. “When we listen to Jay Chou, we’re actually looking back on and cherishing our youth,” one of Chou’s fans said. “We’re longing for the times we can never return to; we’re longing for the people and events in our memories.”
