传统服饰:五大差别勾勒历史画卷

In ancient China, there were no fashion shows. Traditional Chinese clothing was the result of people’s aesthetic (审美的) tastes and social customs. It varied over time, the area, and the social system. Here are the five key variations (差别) about it.

1. Design

Traditional Chinese clothes usually had a straight cut and were loose in shape. In addition, the overall harmony (整体协调性) of the whole set of clothes was also important.

2. Color

People usually wore light colors in daily life. Red, bright yellow, and purple were only for the emperor and his family. Most people wore red at weddings. White was worn at funerals.

3. Gender

Women’s clothing was more diverse than clothing for men. Compared to men’s clothing, women’s clothing had more ornaments (配饰), items, and styles.

4. ____▲____

At first, the ancient Chinese people covered their bodies with leaves. As farming grew, more materials for clothing appeared. Later, linen, cotton, and silk became popular. During the Ming Dynasty, businessmen were not allowed to wear silk because of the government’s policy, even if they were wealthy.

5. History

Almost every dynasty had its own unique clothes, some of which were carefully made and really beautiful.
