The Qilian Mountains are full of life again! Long ago, people cut down trees and hunted animals there. But now, the mountains are healthy and green.
These big mountains stretch for 1,000 kilometers between Qinghai and Gansu. Because they are so big, they make a lot of rain. This rain helps animals like snow leopards (雪豹), wild yaks, and black-necked cranes live there.
Starting in the 1980s, people began to protect the mountains. Over the past years, they stopped people from living or working in the most important areas. Now, rare animals are coming back!
Lang Wenrui works in the forests. He says, “Fifteen years ago, I never saw snow leopards. Now I see them often! I was so excited the first time I saw one.” There are about 700 snow leopards now. They hunt other animals, which helps keep nature in balance.
The government closed 144 mines and helped people move to new homes. Now, more than 2,000 local people work as mountain protectors. They use phones and drones to keep an eye on the mountains.
The Qilian Mountains are a safe home for rare animals once again.
