A very important hydropower (水力发电) project started on Saturday in Xizang, China. The project is located on the lower part of the Yarlung Zangbo River. Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced the start at a special ceremony.
The ceremony happened in Nyingchi City, at the place where the dam for the Mainling hydropower station will be built. Many people attended, including government workers, company representatives, experts, and local people.
This big project will build five hydropower stations, one after another. It will cost about 1.2 trillion yuan. Most of the electricity made here will be sent to other parts of China, but some will also be used in Xizang itself. A new company, the China Yajiang Group, was set up in Beijing to help build and run these power stations well.
Premier Li Qiang visited Xizang before the ceremony. He said that building big national projects must be done with high quality. He added that these projects help the economy, improve people’s lives, and support all ethnic groups. He especially asked everyone to protect the environment while building. “Don’t harm nature,” he said.
He stated that the Yarlung Zangbo hydropower project was extremely important. He wants builders to use the best technology and materials. His goal is to make this a great project for the new era, while carefully protecting the river and land around it.
