After weeks of hard work, Guizhou’s “Cun Chao” football field is almost ready. The “Cun Chao” games will restart on July 26th in Rongjiang County. Famous football stars Roberto Baggio (Italy) and Roberto Carlos (Brazil) will visit. Hong Kong singer Kenny Bee will also give a performance.
This special “Thank You Match” celebrates the community’s strength after terrible floods hit Rongjiang. From June 24th to 28th, heavy rains caused two major floods within just four days. On June 24th, water rose as high as the third floor — the worst flooding since 1954. Streets turned into rivers, traffic stopped, and the famous “Cun Chao” stadium area was damaged.
The old town near the river suffered most. Built in a low area, it saw the highest water. The nearby “Cun Chao” football field — a very important place for everyone — was seriously harmed. The special grass was ruined, the running track broke apart, and sound and light equipment stopped working. “After the flood, everything here was gone,” people said sadly.
Fixing the football field alone needed lots of money, and the June games stopped. But people didn’t lose hope. After the disaster, the government provided money to help people find shelters, repair roads, and fix hospitals and schools. Local people helped move supplies and brought food to workers, cutting work time nearly in half. People across China offered help. A sports company from Jiangsu donated all the materials for the new grass field. Volunteers formed teams to clean away the thick mud. When the stadium lights turned on again, it brought new hope to Rongjiang. “This field means everything to Rongjiang people. Fixing it quickly gives them hope again,” their leader explained.
“Cun Chao” is more than football — it shows Rongjiang’s lively community life. In 2023, it made this once-poor county famous nationwide, bringing tourists who boosted local businesses.
