In recent years, a number of shopping malls across China have begun offering special spaces for fathers and their young children. For instance, The Beijing Chaoyang Joy City has renamed its former “nursing room” to a “parenting room”, allowing both parents to use the facility. This move has sparked lively discussions among the public online.
According to mall staff, the room was upgraded this summer. It now includes an automatic door and is clearly divided into a breastfeeding zone and a diaper-changing area. While fathers are encouraged to use the changing tables, the feeding section remains a private space for mothers. The staff also mentioned that they have received mixed feedback regarding the change and will consider further adjustments based on user experiences.
Meanwhile, Huiduo Mall in Beijing has introduced a “‘super dads’ spot” in response to customer requests. Some fathers expressed the need for a comfortable place to care for their children while shopping. The mall continues to provide separate nursing rooms for mothers and welcomes any reasonable suggestions from visitors.
In Shenzhen, a Rainbow supermarket has set up a similar “super dads’ spot”. When a reporter visited, the room was clearly marked and fully equipped with hot and cold water, a bottle warmer, a diaper-changing table, and soft wipes. Next door, there is a larger nursing room with curtained spaces for mothers who need more privacy. One father waiting outside shared that he often felt unsure about entering traditional nursing rooms, even when they were empty. He appreciates the new family-friendly option and hopes more public places will follow this example.
Some parents have suggested that parent-child facilities should be designed for all family members rather than being labeled for only one parent. Gong Wenjie, an expert in public health at Central South University, supports this view. She emphasizes that parent-friendly facilities in public areas are a sign of society’s support and respect for caregiving roles, and help build a more inclusive and welcoming environment for families.
