If you were a kid in the 1990s, you might have tried something silly: putting a battery on your tongue. It gave a weird metal taste and a light tingling feeling. This funny game was a big hit among children back then. Now, a snack brand from the Netherlands called Rewind has turned that memory into a real snack — chips that taste like a 9-volt battery! The company believes people will buy them to bring back good memories from the past, or simply because they are curious.
Don’t worry, the chips are perfectly safe. They don’t have any real metal or battery inside. Even though they are made to give you the feeling of a small electric shock, all the materials are food-safe. These battery-tasting chips are meant to be fun.
Creating this special taste wasn’t simple. The Rewind team wanted to copy that childhood experience but still make the chips enjoyable to eat. Mattias Larsson, a flavor expert working with Rewind, explained: “We used citric acid (which makes fruits like lemons sour) and baking soda to make your tongue tingle like a real battery. We also used mineral salts to add that metallic flavor. It turned out to be delicious in a fun way, and it makes people want to taste it.”
A news editor named Dominic Preston shared his thoughts: “The chips aren’t too strong. They start sour but are milder than I imagined. I’ve had salt and vinegar chips that were too sour, but these are okay. The mineral taste is what you notice most — it’s tangy and a little like metal. The chips are thinner than I usually prefer. I like thicker chips, but these are still fine.”
Currently, the battery-flavored chips are only available in the Netherlands. However, the company hopes to sell them in other countries very soon. So you might be able to try this strange snack faster than you think!
