On September 28, Wu Yanni won the women’s 100m hurdles (跨栏赛跑) at the National Athletics Championships in Rizhao, Shandong. She finished in 12.90 seconds, her fastest time this season. This victory also marked her fourth consecutive win in this national competition.
Wu was born on July 28, 1997 in Sichuan. She runs the women’s 100-meter hurdles for the Sichuan team and the national team. When she was a child, she enjoyed dancing. But when she was in fifth grade, a big change happened. A local sports school chose her to practice track and field. After just three months of training, she won first place in the 200-meter race at a young people’s competition in Sichuan. Later, in 2012, she went to Beijing to learn how to run hurdles with Coach Yang Hui, starting her great track and field journey.
Wu’s career has seen many successes. In 2015, she won the 100-meter hurdles at the first National Youth Games. She kept improving and won the national title in 2018. This year (2025), she also set a new Chinese record of 8.01 seconds in the women’s 60-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. Because of her strong performances, she became the top-ranked hurdler in Asia.
Many people like Wu not only for her running, but also for her special look. She often wears her hair in two braids and has a confident smile. She also puts on makeup for races. Before she runs, she likes to point one finger to the sky. “I know I can run well, but winning races still makes me feel more sure of myself,” Wu said. “It shows that my coach, my team and I have tried our best.”
