Recently, a woman called “auntie Xie” in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, has become popular on the Internet because she used fluent (流利的) English to communicate with foreign customers.
Auntie Xie is selling fruit at the Chengdu Giant Panda Base. There cute pandas have attracted lots of tourists from all over the world, driving the vendor (小贩) business. Auntie Xie felt that this was a good chance: if I could talk with foreign tourists, my fruit would probably sell out quickly. So she began to learn English and tried to communicate with foreign tourists in English!
Later, she found that it really worked. Because she was able to communicate with foreign tourists well, her apples were basically sold in a minute or two, and even foreign tourists praised her for speaking English so well.
Most of us tend to only see the images of auntie Xie communicating with foreign tourists fluently, but we hardly think about how much effort she has put into making her fluent English so that foreign tourists can understand it faster. Many people in their forties and fifties have a memory that is not as good as when they were young. So it often takes a long time to read a word or sentence well. What’s more, their patience is not as good as before, and they can’t calm down to learn at all because of the trivial (琐碎的) matters of family and the rush of life. But all of those didn’t stop Auntie Xie. She never gives up practicing English and using it in her life.
