A Long March 7 rocket carrying the Tianzhou 7 robotic cargo spaceship blasts off from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province on Wednesday. The spaceship is carrying more than 260 packages with a combined weight of nearly 5.6 metric tons, including several items of scientific apparatus, each of which weighs more than 100 kilograms, mission planners said. It is also carrying 2.4 tons of food comprising fresh vegetables, fruits and Chinese New Year treats for the Shenzhou XVII astronauts, who have been in orbit for nearly three months.

The China Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources has revealed the discovery of a new mineral in a rare earth mine in Taiping town, Nanyang city, Henan province, the ministry announced on Friday. The mineral has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association and is named Ni Pei Stone in honor of Professor Ni Pei, a prominent Chinese geologist. Ni Pei Stone is a cerium-containing mineral with color ranging from light red to reddish-brown. It holds the record for the highest cerium content among silicate minerals discovered in nature.
