In different parts of the world, like India, Africa, and the Middle East, people often eat with their hands. But using the left hand to eat is considered impolite because it’s thought to be unclean. In Thailand, the head is very special, so you shouldn’t pat a child on the head. In Korea, slapping (拍) someone on the back if they aren’t a close friend or family can make them uncomfortable. Every country has its own set of rules about what not to do. So, what are some things you shouldn’t do in China? Let’s find out.

Wearing a green hat is a no-no. In China, wearing a green hat can mean that a man’s wife has not been faithful. This idea started long ago when a businessman’s wife made a green hat for her husband to wear. When the husband went out for business, the wife’s lover would see the green hat and know that he could meet her. That’s why you won’t find green hats in Chinese stores!
Be careful with the word “dongxi”. In Chinese, “dongxi” means “things”, but calling someone a “dongxi” is not nice — it’s like saying they’re just a thing or not good. So, it’s a word to use carefully.
Watch out for certain numbers. Like some people dislike the number 13 in some countries, in China, the number 4 is avoided because it sounds like the word for “death.” Also, calling someone a “250” is not kind, as it means someone who is silly or thoughtless.
Never give a clock as a gift. In China, giving a clock as a gift is a big no-no because the word for “clock” sounds like the word for “end” or “death”. It’s seen as bad luck.
Knowing about these taboos helps in understanding Chinese culture and can make talking and making friends easier when you’re in China or with Chinese people.
