Food and festivals are important parts of Chinese culture. Today, we are going to put them together, and show you some lucky foods during Chinese New Year.

Dumplings

During Chinese New Year, families sit together and eat a big meal. It’s an old tradition for Chinese people in the north to eat dumplings during the big meal. Dumplings look like the ancient coins, and people regard them as symbols of wealth. They say that the more dumplings you eat during New Year, the more money you will make next year. Sometimes people make a few dumplings with coins in it. If a person gets the coin-dumpling, people believe he or she is going to have good luck in the coming year.

Tang yuan

Tang yuan are rice balls, usually sweet. They are the main festival food for the Lantern Festival in fact. But people in the south China eat them during the Chinese New Year. “Tang yuan” sounds like reunion or together in Chinese, making it the symbol of reunion. This is the reason why they are poplar during the Spring Festival, though people in south and north China have different tastes of tang yuan.

Hot pot

Hot pot, or huo guo, is also very important in some places, mainly in the north of China. Eating hot pot makes people feel warm. And the red color symbolizes(象征) that the following year is full of happiness.

, people also eat fishes, Spring Rolls and Chinese New Year Cake (nian gao) during Chinese New Year. Which one do you like best?
