Children in Australia are not moving enough. That makes parents worry that children will run the risk of poor health in later life. Information from the 2022 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children found only a quarter of Australian children were meeting national standards(标准) for their age. So they only get a D- grade for general(总体的) physical activity.
Professor Hesketh, an expert on health care, said the physical activity grades were largely unchanged from the 2018 Report Card. And there was little increase in the time and amount of children’s physical activity. “That was so terrible and I kept thinking about the problems,” she said.
“What is even more worrying is that information collected for the 2022 Report Card was largely collected before COVID-19. But during COVID-19, schools were often closed and children stayed at home. They spent less time playing sports. There is a real need to encourage children to move around more. Many places are asking children to take part in organized sport, but organized sport alone is not enough,” Professor Hesketh said. “Children need more choices of sports to make them interested.”
