New research shows that rising an hour earlier than usual reduces(减少) the risk of depression(抑郁).
Researchers studied 85,000 people. A third thought of themselves as early risers. About 9% stayed up late at night, while the rest appeared to be somewhere in the middle. Researchers found that getting up an hour earlier, in people who usually get up later, helps improve their mood(情绪).
However, the researchers don’t completely understand the reasons why rising an hour earlier is so good for preventing or reducing depression. They thought that it was because getting up an hour earlier made people enjoy more hours of sunshine. However, this is just a guess. More research is needed to prove it.
Then how can people wake up an hour earlier? It can be difficult at first. That’s because in the morning they feel sleepy, while at bedtime they’re far more active. What they can do is to prepare themselves for sleep around two hours before actually going to bed. They can do this by reducing their activities. Therefore, they should eat less, drink less, and do less. Similarly, they could do some physical exercise at the beginning of the day to help wake them up.
