It is very hot this summer. A cool watermelon is really a wonderful choice for hot summer. But recently, there is some bad news about watermelons. A family of three in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, ate watermelon placed overnight in the fridge and had gastroenteritis(肠胃炎). The news made people scared and worried.
Is it secure to eat refrigerated watermelon? People are worrying about that these days. According to a study on bacteria(细菌) formed in watermelon overnight, the researchers cut the watermelon with clean fruit knives and household knives. After that, the watermelon was wrapped(包) in cling film(保鲜膜) and placed in the fridge for 24 hours.
The results showed that watermelons cut with clean fruit knives had only 45 bacteria per(每) 25g, while watermelons cut with household knives had 8400 bacteria per 25g. This study told us that watermelons cut with clean knives will not make watermelons dangerous when stored in the fridge.
Here are some ways to keep us healthy when eating watermelons.
❶ For whole watermelons, run cold water over watermelon before eating.
❷ Cut watermelons with clean knives.
❸Don’t let watermelon pieces sit out at room temperature for longer than three hours.
❹ For cut watermelons, wrap them in cling film and put them in the fridge.
❺ Finish eating watermelons in the fridge in 24 hours. The sooner you eat it, the better!
❻ Clean your fridge often, at least once a month. It is safer for you and your family.
