2022 World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals takes place from 30 September to 9 October in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu. It’s the long-awaited return of the World Team Championships, after the 2020 edition was lost to the global COVID pandemic, and is the only other major international sporting competition after the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 to be held in China this year.
Some 32 men’s and 28 women’s teams challenge for two of the sport’s oldest trophies, the Swaythling and Corbillon Cups. Unsurprisingly, Chinese teams are heavy favorites to win both cups. China has won each event 21 times. Chinese teams have won 11 of the last 12 men’s World Team Championship crowns dating back to the 1995 World Championships in Tianjin. They have also won 20 of the last 22 women’s titles since winning gold in Kolkata in 1975. This year, China sends its best players to keep its titles in both men’s and women’s events. Headlined by current world No. 1 Fan Zhendong, the men’s team is composed of world champions Ma Long, Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin and Lin Gaoyuan. While the women’s team features Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, Wang Yidi and Chen Xingtong.
As the highest level of international sporting event held on the Chinese mainland after the Beijing Winter Olympics earlier this year, the Championships are held behind closed doors and host organized spectators(观众). The 32 men’s and 28 women’s teams are drawn into seven men’s and six women’s groups for single-round-robin(单循环) play. Round-robin matches take place from 30 September and run through 4 October. Knockout(淘汰制的) rounds begin on 5 October, with the women’s final on 8 October and men’s final on 9 October.
Qin Zhijian, head coach of the men’s team, said they aimed for a clean sweep, saying, “The Chengdu Championships is the most important competition this year, and it is the men’s top goal to win the Swaythling Cup.”
