Do you want to say“I love you”to someone you care about? No worries if you have missed Valentine’s Day. March 14 is White Day. It is Japan’s Valentine’s Day－a day to show our loved ones just how much we care about them. People in China’s Taiwan and South Korea also celebrate it.
In Japan, girls send gifts to boys on Valentine’s Day. On White Day, boys who received gifts usually return the favor by giving gifts to those girls. Candy, handmade cookies and white chocolate are popular choices.
The tradition of giving gifts on White Day is likely connected to Japan’s sending and giving culture. Japanese people like giving gifts when others take care of them or when they receive gifts from others. They think it is a good way to say thank you.
Yet it is not clear where White Day came from. Some local candy makers say that they invented the day to give candy, in response to Valentine’s Day. As most candy is made of white sugar, the day is called White Day. People also think that the color white stands for purity and love.
