May 21, 2026 marks Xiaoman, or Grain Buds, the eighth of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese calendar. At this time, wheat grains in the north are gradually filling but not yet ripe, while rivers swell in the south with increasing rainfall, reflecting a state of “a little full.”
Xiaoman is divided into three pentads: bitter herbs flourish; then shade-loving grasses wither; and finally wheat ripens. The solar term embodies the wisdom of keeping things just right — full but not overflowing — suggesting that a life of modest contentment is true fulfillment.
